INSTRUCTION:

Online Lessons (through Skype) - I am now offering online instruction from the comfort of my own home (and yours!). I am a patient, knowledgeable instructor with many years of experience. Our lessons can focus on drumming technique (darabuka / doumbek, riq, lap-style frame drum, udu, or djembe) or on the study of rhythm itself - including concepts, ideas and exercises which can be applied to singing or to any instrument.

When you pre-pay for your first lesson, I will contact you by email to arrange a time that's best for both of us.

If you have questions before registering for an online lesson, please email me.

DVDs - I have two instructional DVDs for sale. The first one, Time Zone, is a collaboration with my California-based friend and colleague Marla Leigh. The video is focused on learning duet compositions (intermediate to advanced level) for frame drum and darabuka, and includes detailed information about playing techniques for both drums.

The other DVD, Exploring the Drum, is designed for the beginning drummer. In the video, I introduce and outline two different styles of hand drumming - West African djembe and Middle Eastern darabuka. The video is clear and well-paced, with detailed close-ups on the drum and hand positions.

Courses - Most of the teaching I'm doing these days is through the School of Music at Acadia University in Nova Scotia. In addition to directing the university gamelan ensemble, I will be teaching the following courses in Fall/Winter 2011-2012:

Introduction to Gamelan (MUSI 2383)
World Rhythm and Drumming (MUSI 2083)
Musicianship: Advanced Rhythm (MUSI 4663 SO)

For more details, please visit the School of Music website.

And if you'd like to find out about upcoming events, please join my mailing list.
